I bought VK pro in 2009, works perfectly, but it will not update. I am getting a message "Cannot connect to update server". Any ideas please?

I have visited the official website and saw that the latest version of the software is VirusKeeper 2011, which could indicate that it has been discontinued. The 2009 version won't work normally because the servers are not available anymore, and as a result you get the error.
I recommend you choose another antivirus/antimalware solution. There are plenty available and updated regularly. Use the database of Software Informer to look for some.
